What is the GNM Program?

General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM) is a 3-year diploma program recognised by the Indian Nursing Council (INC) that prepares students to become fully qualified Registered Nurses. It is one of the most respected and widely recognised nursing qualifications in India, offering a comprehensive clinical education across medical, surgical, paediatric, obstetric, and psychiatric nursing.

GNM nurses are the backbone of India's hospitals. They work across all departments — Operation Theatres, ICUs, Emergency Rooms, Maternity Wards, and Outpatient units. With the rapid expansion of private hospitals, medical colleges, and government healthcare programs, GNM-qualified nurses are among the most in-demand healthcare professionals in the country today.

At EUEI, the GNM program goes beyond textbooks. Our students complete mandatory clinical postings at affiliated government and private hospitals, gaining real-world nursing skills under the supervision of senior nursing educators and clinical practitioners — ensuring they are truly job-ready on the day of graduation.

Frequently Asked Questions – GNM

What is the difference between GNM and ANM nursing courses? +
ANM (2 years) is an auxiliary nursing program focused on community health and maternal care. GNM (3 years) is a more advanced diploma that trains you as a Registered Nurse qualified to work across all hospital departments — including ICU, OT, Emergency, and Maternity. GNM graduates have significantly more career options, higher salaries, and can advance to Post-Basic B.Sc Nursing.
Can I get a government nursing job directly after GNM? +
Yes. After completing GNM and registering with the State Nursing Council, you become eligible to apply for government Staff Nurse positions — including NHM, AIIMS, state government hospitals, ESI, Railways Nursing, and DRDO. These positions are notified regularly. Our placement team helps students track and prepare for these exams.
Is the GNM course available for male students at EUEI? +
Yes, GNM is open to both male and female candidates as per INC guidelines. Male nurses are in demand across ICU, Emergency, Psychiatric, and Operation Theatre nursing departments. EUEI welcomes applications from both genders for the GNM program.
Can I work abroad after completing GNM from EUEI? +
GNM opens international pathways. Gulf countries (UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait) regularly hire GNM-qualified Indian nurses with hospital experience. For countries like USA, UK, Australia, and Canada, further licensure exams (NCLEX, NMC, AHPRA) are required. EUEI provides guidance on upgradation pathways including Post-Basic B.Sc Nursing to strengthen international eligibility.
What is the duration of clinical internship in GNM, and is it paid? +
The GNM program includes a mandatory 6-month internship at the end of the 3-year course. This is done at affiliated hospitals under the supervision of senior nurses. While the internship is primarily educational (not employment), some hospitals provide a monthly stipend during this period. The internship is essential for completing your course and is counted toward the State Nursing Council registration.
